THE BOND

There's a reason the term 'mans best friend' exists.

The bond between you and your pet is something so sacred and unique to each pet owner.

I want to create a day to not only celebrate that with you, but to create

breath-taking portraits of your pet that you can love and share for a lifetime.

HI, I'M ZITA MAKKOS

Zita is an internationally recognized portrait photographer based in Sutter Creek, California, serving Calaveras, Amador, San Joaquin, and Sacramento counties. As a Portrait Master (Now Icon Awarded) Associate Photographer, she specializes in magazine-style portraits—including beauty, families, boudoir, headshots, and pets.

With a career starting in Hungary, Australia, and since 2015 in Northern California, Zita was honored as Best of Calaveras Professional Photographer & Studio in 2020.

Now, from her spacious and welcoming studio on 71 Main Street in Sutter Creek, she creates timeless heirloom portraits that celebrate the deep bond between you and your pet.

She also dedicates her time and talent to volunteering at her local animal shelter, capturing compelling portraits of rescue pets to help increase their chances of finding a loving home. She believes every pet deserves to be seen, cherished, and remembered—whether they’re waiting for their forever family or have already found their place in your heart.

Because pets are more than just animals—they're family.

Let’s create a portrait together that preserves their spirit forever.

As your pet photographer, my goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for both you and your pet.

I know many pet owners worry about how their furry friend will behave during a session. And since pet photography is still a new experience for many, it’s natural to have questions about how it all works.

To help, I’ve put together answers to the most common questions about photographing dogs and cats.

Q & A

I’ve never had a pet photography session before, and I’m a little nervous. What can I expect?

First and foremost, take a deep breath and relax—your pet will pick up on your energy, so the more at ease you are, the more comfortable they’ll be too. My approach is calm, patient, and fun, ensuring both you and your furry friend enjoy the experience. With over 10 years of professional photography experience, I bring a gentle presence, plenty of love for animals, and expertise in styling, posing, and lighting. My goal is to create a stress-free session that captures the unique personality and bond you share with your pet. Just show up, enjoy the moment, and let me take care of the rest!

Can humans be in any of the photos?

Please do! While the main focus of the session is your pet, I love capturing the special bond you share. I encourage you to be in a few photos with your furry friend to create meaningful portraits that showcase your connection. If children are joining, they’ll need to be old enough to sit up on their own. To ensure a smooth session, I recommend bringing another adult who can take them out of the studio once their photos are done, so your pet can stay relaxed and focused for the remainder of the shoot.

How long will our session last?

Your session will typically last about an hour, but I always adapt to your pet’s needs. If your pet needs extra time to settle in, we’ll take it slow to ensure they feel comfortable. On the other hand, some pets are naturally relaxed, and I may capture beautiful images even faster. No matter what, I won’t rush the process—I’m committed to staying until we’ve created stunning portraits that truly capture your pet’s personality. Please allow another hour or so for the design consultation after the session.

My dog doesn’t know how to sit and has a ton of energy, is that a problem?

Not a problem at all! While it’s great if your dog knows a few commands, it’s not necessary. I’ve worked with all types of personalities and energy levels, and I always capture amazing images. Honestly, I want your dog to be exactly who they are! You're here to capture the true spirit and personality of your pet—not just perfect poses. So relax, let your dog’s unique energy shine, and we’ll create portraits that truly reflect their one-of-a-kind character!

What if my dog needs to stay on a leash?

Your pet’s well-being is always my top priority, so if your dog needs to stay on a leash, that's perfectly fine! During post-processing, I can easily remove the leash from any images you choose to purchase. Please note that the leash will remain visible in the images you view during the selection process, but it will be edited out of the final portraits you decide to keep. This way, you’ll have a beautiful, natural-looking image while ensuring your pet feels safe and secure throughout the session.

When do you schedule Portrait Sessions?

I schedule all pet sessions any days of the week, except Wednesdays. But keep in mind that our weekends are very popular and always go fast among our regular portrait clients.

What about cats? Mine doesn’t obey commands!

No worries at all—cats can be a little unpredictable, and that’s totally okay!In fact, 90% of photographing a cat is just allowing them to explore and come around at their own pace. I encourage clients to bring along their cat’s favorite toys or even a worn t-shirt to help make them feel more comfortable in the studio. I give cats plenty of time to roam, sniff, and even hide if needed, before gently encouraging them to come out for the photos. And, if all else fails, I’ve found that a little catnip can work wonders!

What age should my dog be?

Your dog’s age is perfect just as it is—whether they’re a playful pup or a wise senior, I photograph dogs of all ages! Don’t let age be a deciding factor. That said, I do recommend not putting it off. Many of my clients have shared that they regret not capturing portraits of their beloved dog sooner, especially after losing a pet unexpectedly. The best time for photos is now, so let’s create lasting memories of your furry friend while they’re with you. 🐾❤️

My dog is sick, can you fit in a last minute session?

If your dog is terminally ill, I will do my best to adjust my schedule to accommodate an urgent session. Your pet’s well-being is my priority, and I’ll make every effort to fit in a session to create beautiful, lasting memories during this special time. Please reach out as soon as possible, and we’ll work together to make it happen.

Why should I have my pet professionally photographed?

Professional pet photography is more than just snapping a few pictures—it’s about capturing the true essence of your pet and the special bond you share. Pets are an integral part of the family for so many people, and for many of us, they’re like children. In the U.S., as of 2024, over 85 million families own pets, which is approximately 66% of U.S. households. It shows just how much our furry friends mean to us.

When you choose professional pet photography, you’re investing in high-quality, archival prints that will preserve those memories for generations to come. I focus on capturing your pet's unique personality and the connection between you both. Each photo undergoes a meticulous editing process to remove distractions like leashes, unwanted objects, or even eye boogers and tear stains, leaving you with a flawless, timeless portrait. This attention to detail ensures that your final image is more than just a photograph—it’s a cherished memory that will last a lifetime.

Do you only do indoor pet photography sessions?

No, while my specialty is indoor pet photography, I also offer outdoor sessions! These take place in the beautiful, historic town of Sutter Creek, where we can capture your pet’s personality against a charming and picturesque backdrop. Whether indoors or outdoors, I’m committed to creating stunning portraits that truly reflect your pet’s unique spirit.
